University of Arizona LGBTQ Events for Spring 2008

January

  • Thursday, January 31, 6:30pm at Centennial Hall
    Free Reception for UA students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners before the performance of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
    Dressing up in moves we're used to seeing on women's bodies, the all-male Trocks bring us up close to the glimmer of some third sex, whisking us away to a gender wonderland. Must have ticket to show to attend the reception . The purpose of the reception is to network, share information about campus resources, and celebrate LGBT culture.

    LGBTQ Affairs and Residence Life are seeking students, staff, and faculty who are interested in being trained to serve as facilitators for the UA SafeZONE training.

    Deadline for LGBTQ Colloquium Presentation submissions
    In celebration of our founding, the UA Institute for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies invites all UA graduate and professional students who are engaged in LGBTQ or sexuality-related scholarship to present their work (completed or in progress) at a colloquium scheduled on March 31. Presentations are limited to 10 minutes. Send a 1-paragraph abstract of your presentation or poster to Dr. Caren Zimmerman at lgbs@email.arizona.edu. Please include your name, program of study, email, and telephone number.

    The Color of Queer: The 1 st Annual UA Queer People of Color Film Series
    - “Flag Wars” http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2003/flagwars/ 
    “Flag Wars" is a poignant account of the politics and pain of gentrification. Working-class black residents in Columbus, Ohio fight to hold on to their homes. Realtors and gay home-buyers see fixer-uppers. The clashes expose prejudice and self-interest on both sides, as well as the common dream to have a home to call your own.

    Seymour Polatkin is a successful, gay Indian poet from Spokane who confronts his past when he returns to his childhood home on the reservation to attend the funeral of a dear friend. Based upon Sherman Alexie's book of poetry of the same name.

    Professor Nancy Polikoff to read from her new book ,
    Beyond (Straight and Gay) Marriage: Valuing All Families under the Law.”
     
    Polikoff is a Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law, where she teaches Sexuality and the Law and has taught Family Law for more than 20 years. Polikoff was a visiting Professor of Law at the University of Arizona two years ago.
