To the LGBTQ and Allied Campus Community:
I wanted to follow up with you regarding the position of Director of the Office of LGBTQ Affairs at The University of Arizona.
As you may know, October 3rd was Cathy Busha’s last day as Director. We are grateful for her service to The University of Arizona, and are sad to see her go. However, we wish her and Anna well in Denver, and fully support their decision to be closer to family.
Cathy has done a wonderful job institutionalizing this vital position at The University of Arizona, and I want to ensure you that President Shelton and the Dean of Students Office remains committed to ensuring this position is staffed. To that end, here are updates on the Office and search process.
- Dr. Keith Humphrey, Associate Dean of Students, will be serving as Interim Director of LGBTQ Affairs. Keith has extensive knowledge and experience working with the campus LGBTQ community. You can reach Keith at khumphrey@arizona.edu. Also, Courtney Jones is interning with the Office of LGBTQ Affairs this academic year, and will be part of the team who ensures the Office continues to run smoothly during this transition. Courtney is a Master’s of Social Work student at Arizona State University (Tucson campus); you can reach Courtney at courtney.e.jones@asu.edu.
- Beginning this month we are launching a national search to find a new Director of LGBTQ Affairs. The position will be posted shortly on the UA HR website and in national publications. We will be sure to send out the job description to campus listservs, and ask for your help in also getting the word out about the LGBTQ Affairs Director position. The search committee is compromised of diverse campus and community LGBTQ and Allied leaders. Once we have the search committee fully charged, we will update you on its members.
- Our hope is to have as thoughtful a search as the one that resulted in the hiring of Cathy. At this point in the search process, it is difficult to place specific dates on when candidates will be on campus and when the successful person will ultimately start as our new Director. Our plan is to find the right person for the community and have them start as soon as possible. We will make sure the community is aware of our timeline for campus interviews as it develops.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any thoughts or questions. We want to reassure you that the Office of LGBTQ Affairs is very strong, and programs and events will continue during the transition period. We also will be sure to keep the campus informed of the search process.
