Message from the Dean
With growing evidence that students are cheating and plagiarizing in increasing numbers, we often focus our attention towards the punishment of the offender rather than preventing the violation in the first place. At the Dean of Students Office, we recognize the need to move towards preventing academic dishonesty and are working, with campus-wide support, to develop a robust Academic Integrity program.
If we hope to change behavior, creating and maintaining a culture of high standards requires the active participation of students, faculty, and administrators β each plays a role in developing a climate of academic integrity. To this end, in 2007, our office established an Academic Integrity Advisory Council (AIAC) whose goal is to promote academic integrity, organize university efforts, and create a culture of honesty at UA.
Via the AIAC, our DOS website, our podcast/video series and campus wide discussions, the Dean of Students Office is continuously working to provide the resources, strategies, and guidance necessary for the university community to advance our academic integrity standards. From keeping our website current and relevant, to providing pertinent topics in our podcasts/video series, our goal is to stay proactive and help create an academic learning environment that is free of cheating.
In the next year our plans include:
- Engaging the campus community in dialog pertaining to ethical behavior and integrity in the classroom
- Educating students and faculty on the academic integrity process
- Building out multi-media resources to assist faculty and students in obtaining critical information 24/7 on the Academic Integrity policy and process
- Developing tools and resources to make the academic integrity process more user friendly to faculty and students
- Developing a pilot program focused on increasing the proactive efforts to educate students on plagiarism in the hopes of reducing the number of plagiarism academic integrity cases overall.
What our βnewβ Academic Integrity program will look like in the future, we aren't exactly sure β but with your continued input and support we have the ability to create a community with a strong foundation rooted in honesty and integrity.
Dr. Carol Thompson
Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs
& Dean of Students
