Student Life Department of the Month
ARIZONA STUDENT MEDIA
PREPARES LEADERS AND PROFESSIONALS, SERVES ACADEMIC COMMUNITY AND FOSTERS DIVERSITY
The Dean of Students Office oversees many aspects that enhance and sustain community at The University of Arizona. In addition to central Dean of Students Office functions, the Dean oversees the following departments that come together as the Student Life area: Arizona Student Media, ASUA Student Government, Military Sciences/ROTC, and Multicultural Affairs & Student Success. Each month we will profile a different area of Student Life so that you can learn more about ways to connect your students to these exciting learning opportunities.
Student media are a central part of campus life by helping maintain a sense of community and offering a forum for discussion of ideas and issues. Through the Arizona Daily Wildcat, KAMP radio and UATV-3, over 300 students gain valuable leadership experience making independent decisions, organizing large staffs, and learning firsthand the responsibilities that come with freedom of expression. The practical working environment offered by AZ Student Media prepares students for a variety of careers and opportunities, from reporting and writing to sales and marketing to systems and software management. In some respects, it’s the university’s own internship program, open to all students regardless of major and experience. Many alumni have launched successful professional careers from their experiences in student media.
By offering a practical outlet for what our students learn in class, the Daily Wildcat and our broadcast media help serve the academic community too. Students build on their skills and knowledge in such academic disciplines as journalism, media arts, computer science, accounting and marketing. Two faculty members serve on the Student Media Advisory Board, and the Daily Wildcat has long enjoyed close ties to the journalism department and faculty. The Daily Wildcat, read at least four times a week by 87% of UA undergraduates, recently celebrated its 100th birthday in 1999.
Through their news and public affairs coverage, the Daily Wildcat and UATV-3 foster a wide range of stories and opinions on cultural, racial, gender and diversity issues, and offer an outlet for discussion on “hot-button” topics to the campus community. In entertainment, KAMP radio celebrates all music genres, from punk to hip hop, jazz and contemporary.
The reach of Arizona Student Media is broad – with over 20,000 copies of The Daily Wildcat produced each day, 25,000 copies of the Student/Faculty/Staff Directory distributed to campus offices, and UATV-3 broadcasting in all of the residence halls – it is easy to be impacted by this group of student leaders.
