Withdrawals
Q. How do I withdraw from a class or the university this semester?
A. The withdrawal procedure is dictated by dates.

  • Prior to the first day of classes, if you decide to change your schedule or not to attend school, you may drop your classes or completely withdraw via WebReg in Student Link.
  • If you decide to drop a class during the semester, you must get a “ change of schedule” form (available online or through the Office of the Registrar or any academic department).
  • Deadlines exist which affect class withdrawals.
  • For complete change of schedule information, refer to the Office of the Registrar.
  • To complete a full withdrawal and leave the UA on or after the first day of classes, contact the Dean of Students Office, Old Main 203, (520) 621-7059, to process a complete withdrawal. (If you are receiving financial aid, you will also need to contact the Financial Aid Department to see how a withdrawal will affect your obligation. They can be contacted at (520) 621-1858 or at their website.)

Q. How do I retroactively withdraw?
A. To retroactively withdraw from the University, you must complete a General Petition. Undergraduate students should visit the academic policies section of their catalog year (the year you entered the UA) and go to the Retroactive Withdrawal section. You may also find a general petition form in the Office of Curriculum & Registration, Administration 210. Graduate Students should contact the Graduate College, Administration Third Floor. For more information please refer to the Office of Curriculum and Registration.

Absences
Q. How does the university define a leave of absence and how do I obtain one?
A. The Undergraduate Student Leave of Absence assists and encourages students to return and graduate after a one to two semester absence from campus. To qualify, students must satisfy the following criteria:

  • be registered during the semester immediately prior to the beginning of the leave
  • have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, both at the time of application for leave and following the posting of grades for the semester immediately preceding the term of the requested leave of absence
  • have their University accounts paid in full, both at the time of leave application and following the posting of grades for the semester immediately preceding the term of the requested leave of absence
  • have no pending disciplinary action

Students with this status need not apply for or pay readmission fees, and may register for classes during their priority registration period. Leave of Absence applications are available through Registration and Transcripts website. For assistance with the form, contact your college dean's office. International students should contact the Center for Global Student Programs.

Q. How can I get an excused absence from class?
A. The Dean of Students Office provides excused absences for university-sponsored events. If you need to miss a class for a university-sponsored event, please ask the faculty or staff responsible for that event to request an excuse from the Dean of Students Office. Complete policy information can be found at University Handbook for Appointed Personnel. If you need to miss class for personal reasons, we suggest that you let your instructors know in advance of that absence (if possible). Instructors are not obligated to excuse students from class without a Dean of Students Office excuse, but many will accommodate pre-arranged personal absences.
